It all started at a Best Buy register.
In my early 20s, I was working at Radio Shack. By myself. At Christmas.
And I was robbed at knife point AND gun point.
That moment could have shrunk me. Instead, it moved me. I left for Best Buy... a bigger company, more people around, so I wouldn't be standing there alone.
Then Christmas came around again. I was NOT having the best day. But I still showed up "on," doing my best for every single person in my line.
A young dad walked up with his son and a brand new PlayStation. And I was "upselling" him on the product replacement plan.
He looked right at me, handed me his card, and said...
"You need to come work for me."
He was a chiropractor. Dr. Robert Martinez in Campbell, California. I was literally POACHED from a register. (Side note... that's part of why I help chiropractors with hiring now. But that's another story.)
And I fell in love with chiropractic. The power of it. The changes I watched it make in our patients' lives.
I remember asking him if I could get a degree in this, so it could be a real career. At the time, I couldn't.
That thought never left the back of my head. Making this a true career... and someday, a school of sorts where I could teach assistants to do the same.
Maybe you're in one of those moments right now. A hard morning. A shaky season. Keep showing up "on." You never know who's standing in your line.
